Learn to play Idioteque on a pad controller
I've made an arrangement of the first few sections of Radiohead's "Idioteque", playable on a Ableton Push, MPC, Korg Pad Control or other pad-grid type instrument, in combination with Ableton Live.
I've written out the Intro, Verse, and Chorus in the grid tab notation that I've been developing. It is read much like guitar tab - the lines represents the vertical position of the pad, the numbers represent the horizontal position, left to right.
The rest is fairly similar to standard staff notation, except regular noteheads are square, and minims and semibreves are round.
The overarching notation method began as a notation designed specifically for the Ableton Push, which you can read all about here. But with so much amazing virtuosic playing being done on 16-pad MPCs and such, it makes sense to open it up to that format. In fact, this 16-pad version of the notation system solves a few of the big problems I encountered in the Push notation system - a staff four spaces deep instead of 8 is much more manageable, and there is much less need for additional symbols, seeing there are no additional Push-specific buttons or knobs being used.
The notation is done in Microsoft Excel (yes you read that correctly) which to be honest was a real headache. I have been speaking to folks at Steinberg about implementing this in Dorico, and they have been open-minded about it. But I feel like there'll be no real pressure to implement it until there is a visible demand. So if you think this kind of notation could be useful, please hit me up so that I know there are people out there who are into it.
I did find that in this piece it made sense to separate the hands - kind of like a piano grand staff. This was not part of my original system, but when one hand has to hold a really long note while the other does complex patterns, it seems visually much cleaner to just separate them out.
I would love to hear how you go if you try it out! Maybe you can update some of the sounds so that they are closer to the original, or extend it further into the song, or maybe improve on the notation system - please shout out if you do!
