Magic City Counterpoint
I'd like to introduce a new project that I'm super excited about. It's a collaboration between me and my good friend Madeleine Cocolas, and we're calling it Magic City Counterpoint. Here are a couple of teaser loops we've made:
Here's a little bio about the project.
Magic City Counterpoint is Madeleine Cocolas and Chris Perren. Together, they make evocative and textural electronic music.
Each an accomplished composer/producer in their own right, their story begins as strangers, admiring each others’ music from across the Pacific. Cocolas worked in Seattle and New York, attracting an international following producing stunning piano-driven ambient music. Perren meanwhile carved a niche in the indie-classical world with his group Nonsemble and unique audio-visual practices.
Cocolas and Perren met for coffee in 2018, bonded over the challenges and joys of being a composer with small children, and began to collaborate on pieces shortly after. When the first track was somehow completed amongst the chaos of work and parenting, and both agreed that it was deadset freaking fire, it was simply too uncanny not to make more. Surviving the shock over the fact that the collaboration was truly bearing fruit, Cocolas and Perren have since continued this work, zeroing in on a unique sound which is somehow more than the sum of each composer’s personal style.
Their collaborative work takes shape as files bouncing back and forth with few verbal discussions or indications, with an agreed-upon rule of no preciousness, no hesitation. No files are transferred without the full understanding and complete acceptance that it may be deleted or unrecognisably transformed. In stolen time and small hours as children sleep, the works come together and harness a kind of directness and clarity borne from this time-pressured and unorthodox process.
Best place to keep up with this project currently is the Magic City Counterpoint instagram page. Stay tuned for a release in 2021.
