This is a lovely little animation that I wrote some cheesy music for recently. It’s a promo for our talented photographer friends Todd & Alyda. Pete Foley and Hans Van Vliet of IV Motion animated it.

I did the sound effects as well as the music - fortunately I had a cool vintage robot toy that my friend Nat had given me ages ago, which I threw, walked and slid around under a microphone to get the effects.

The music was interesting to do - the first thing I did for it was a much more continuous piece, just hinting between the different moods of love, alarm, disappointment, etc. as it rolled along. I chatted to Pete (the animator), after this first draft & he felt that it was too subtle, and needed to be more extravagant… so I abandoned all sense of continuity or thematic cohesion, and just reflected the rapidly changing emotions in tightly-packaged cliches.

I was reluctant to do this at first, because I’m really into cohesion and theme/variation, and I felt like the first draft was way more clever (and I like my music being clever…). Eventually though after I got over that and started just pumping out cliches of love/fear/falling down/being impaled on a fork; it actually worked a lot better.

I think it’s a really fun video, & I feel pretty proud of the product, considering it was only a few days work.
